WARNING!: If you do not want to read the story for "The Breach" then do not read any further! "The Breach" (Open) (Sickbay)
Hoshi enters sickbay and asks Dr. Phlox if it is feeding time, "When isn't it?" He takes a small fur ball out of a container and gives it to Hoshi who is curious about it. He tells her that it is a Tribble. He explains that it is difficult to acquire because it is outlawed on most worlds, but assures her that it is far from dangerous, in fact the only thing they do is eat and breed.
He then takes the Tribble and drops it into a cage, a scene somewhat reminiscent of feeding the raptors on
Jurassic Park ensues. Hoshi looks horrified as Phlox explains that the only thing that keeps their population in check is the abundance of reptiles on their home world.
Phlox notices her discomfort and asks if she is feeling all right. Hoshi tries to compose herself as she explains she was just coming by to deliver a transmission from the Denobulan Science Academy, marked urgent.
After looking at the message, Phlox looks concerned.

Capt. Archer, Travis, Trip, Malcolm and Dr. Phlox are standing around the table display viewing what has been mapped of a cave system. It appears that several Denobulan scientists have been underground for 6 months, and the Denobulan Science Academy (DSA) lost contact with the team 3 weeks ago.
The planet is called Xantoras, where for the last several years the government has been politically unstable, and in the last few weeks a militant faction has taken control, and are now demanding that all off-worlders leave or face imprisonment or worse.
The DSA cannot arrive in time to get their own people out, so Enterprise who is closer is going in to get them out. First they are going to have to find them.
Travis has some spelunking experience, but Trip and Malcolm are going to have to learn as they go.
Phlox thanks Archer for his help with this unusual request
(Enterprise enters orbit of Xantoras)
(Launch Bay)
Travis, Trip and Malcolm are inventorying their supplies when Travis calls of 'waste disposal units'. Trip picks one up and asks what it's for. Travis explains that they take out everything they take in.

Archer comes in and tells our 3 officers that the Xantoras regional governor has issued a general order, and they only have 3 days to get the Denobulans out. The military is preparing search patrols to arrest any stray off-worlders when the deadline arrives. So they only have a day and a half to find the Denobulans otherwise they are to turn back.
As the shuttle enters orbit there is an exodus of other ships, leaving orbit. One of the transports leaving the planet declares an emergency. It's reactor casing has ruptured. They request permission to return to the planet, stating that several compartments have been flooded with radiation. They have injured passengers and crew, their situation is critical, but their request is denied. In fact, they go so far as to threaten them if they try to land.
Our hero Archer sets course for the damaged transport, proving why he's the Captain, to offer assistance.
(Sickbay)
Phlox is moving from one patient to another telling the medics what to do, when a patient is brought in who was working near the reactor when it ruptured. Phlox seems to be in a daze as he stares at the patient. His gaze is broken when the medic asks what they should do with him. Phlox has them put him in the imaging chamber.
(Xantoras)
The landing party is scouting the entrance to a cave, but the only thing their tri-corder is picking up is 3 humans, one of which (Malcolm) who is not entirely sure they are headed in the right direction. Trip says make that two, but Travis believes that they are on the right trail. This cave is the closest to the Denobulans camp site.
As they search through the caves (the best cave sets I have seen on a TV series I might add) they come to a cliff. Trip and Malcolm aren't sure they are on the right path, but Travis seems sure. Trip asks if there isn't a beginners cliff they can start on. Travis offers to go first.
They set up their repelling gear and prepare for the decent. Then Travis takes the lead.
(Enterprise Sickbay)
Archer enters and asks about the patients. Phlox explains that the first two are well, but the third received a heavy dose of radiation. He has been stabilized for now, but he is going to need intracellular regeneration. It is a complex procedure, but the odds are in his favor.
The patient awakens, confused as to where he is. Archer explains where he is and about the accident that happened on his transport.
It is at this moment that he notices Phlox standing behind Archer. Archer explains that Phlox is the doctor, that he is here to help, but the alien would rather die then be treated by Phlox. Phlox looks hurt, but not surprised.
(Enterprise corridor outside sickbay)
Phlox explains that their two species have a complicated history. They have gone to war on several occasions. The last ending over 300 years ago, but the bad blood lingers.
Archer asks if the Dr. couldn't persuade the patient to set aside the anger for a few hours, but Phlox doesn't see how that will work when he didn't even want him to be in the room. "I don't think you realize how much bad blood there is."
Archer suggests that Phlox could sedate the patient and then perform the treatment, but Phlox has to respect the will of the patient even if it means death. "The will of the patient is the cornerstone of Denobulan medical ethics." (There's a lesson in there, I just know it!) Archer counters, "Don't you believe that if you can help someone you're ethically bound to do so?" Phlox points out that Hypocrites was not Denobulan, but Archer points out that this is an earth ship. Archer won't let a patient die in his sickbay if there is something that can be done to stop it, but without consent there is nothing Phlox can do. Archer gives him an order, which Phlox can't follow.
(Xantoras caves)
Travis, Trip and Malcolm are repelling down a rock face. Travis warns them to watch there footing. The warning is heard, but a rock is broke loose anyway. No harm done, they move on. When they reach a ledge Travis has Malcolm and Trip take a rest, while he sees what is below.
While on the ledge, Malcolm spots something along the wall. A small case. Trip recognizes some of the characters on the case as Denobulan. Malcolm asks "You don't suppose Denobulans carry out everything they bring in?" Trip opens the case to find rock samples. It appears they are on the right track.
(Sickbay)
Archer asks how the patient is doing. He wants to return to his ship, but it will be a few days before they can go back on board.
Archer tries to make plain that he has been exposed to high levels of radiation, and needs treatment. Without treatment he will not survive more then two days. He assures the patient that despite the troubled history Phlox is an excellent doctor.
The patient states that there history is far more then troubled. He asks if Phlox told him that the Denobulan battle tactics resulted in the deaths of 20 million Antaran casualties. Archer says that he wasn't that specific. Not surprising, they have been very successful at putting it behind them.
Archer asks if he wants to become a casualty of a war that ended over 300 years ago. Archer tries to convey that Phlox has never given him any reason to question his skill or his integrity. He may be a good doctor, but the Antaran patient dose not intend to find out.
He is the first Antaran to see a Denobulan in 6 generations.
Archer respects his history, but the Denobulans that he describes don't match the Denobulans Archer has met. "Don't sacrifice your life based on preconceptions." (lessons, lessons, every where)
Archer confronts Phlox. Why hasn't this been mentioned before? Not their proudest moment, but they have done their best to put it behind them.
It turns out that this is the first Antaran Phlox has met. Archer finds it odd that no attempt has been made to reconcile in over 300 years.
It's the same old story. Both sides are taught that the other is the enemy. Archer asks that he too puts the preconceptions behind him, to talk to him, try to change his mind, gain his trust. "Your his doctor, he's your patient, find a way!"
(Xantoras caves)
They have reached the bottom and have to decide which direction to go. Trip suggests they flip a coin. (do they have coins, or is that just a figure of speech that has hung around?) Malcolm picks one tunnel from the other because of the rock formations. If he were a geologist, that's the way he'd go.
They come to a narrow ledge angled downward. As it begins to get steeper they stop so Travis can lock off. Malcolm, who is in the lead takes a step forward and loses his footing as the ledge gives way beneath him.
Malcolm begins to gain speed as he slides down the slope. As the line comes tight Trip is pulled off his feet and begins the down hill slide following Malcolm. Travis who was securing their anchor is pulled off his feet as the anchor is pulled out of the rock face, leaving him with only one place to go, down after the others.
They continue to fall out of control when they come to an open chasm. First Malcolm and then Trip fall over the edge with no bottom in sight. As Travis approaches the edge his foot gets jammed into an opening bringing him to a stop with a crack of bone and obvious pain. Travis is now using all his might to keep the weight of Trip and Malcolm from pulling him over the edge. Sometimes being a hero means just being in the right place at the right time.
Still trying to keep from falling over the edge, Travis braces himself while Trip and Malcolm swing back and forth trying to get a hold on the wall face. They keep swing back and forth, just missing hold of the rock face. Travis calls out that he can't hold it much longer. Trip tries again, calling out 1..........2...........3 and just as Travis losses hold on the rope Trip manages to secure an anchor in the rock face, saving him self and Malcolm from falling into the darkness below. (I love this show!)
Now, up on the ledge with Travis, Trip scans Travis' ankle. It is broken along with a couple torn ligaments. Travis says that they are going to have to keep moving and to give him something for the pain, but Trip tells him that he isn't going anywhere. Travis says he can make it, but Malcolm points out that they are already behind schedule, Travis will only slow them down, but adds thanks for getting them this far. Trip tells Travis "You'll be all right." But Travis counters "Respectfully Sir, It's not me I'm worried about."
(Enterprise Sickbay)
Phlox is looking over a medical display and then begins to check the Antaran patients bio signs when the patient wakes with a fright. "What are you doing?" he asks. "Checking your bio signs nothing else."
Phlox who seems to be doing his best to help this man is faced with many years of resentment. Phlox tries to engage in small talk, asking him what he does ( a teacher of xenomythology by the way ), and how this planet must have suited his research well.
The Antaran wants to know why Phlox wants to save his life. Phlox, answers that he is a doctor. The Antaran asks if he believes that saving one Antaran will assuage his guilt for having killed millions. Phlox explains that he hasn't killed anyone. "Now you finally have your chance."
Phlox tries to explain that the regeneration procedure is quite safe. The Antaran cuts him off saying, "You must know a great deal about our anatomy, after what your doctors did to us."
Phlox, unsettled, walks away through the curtain and across sickbay, but the Antaran continues his questioning. He wants to know if Phlox was raised hearing stories about the evil Antarans, did they give him night mares? Phlox says he could ask the same question about his people.
The Antaran asks Phlox if he has children, did he tell them the same stories, did he teach his children to hate Antarans, just like he was taught? Phlox says his children have nothing to do with this, but the Antaran wonders what they would think of their father if they could see what he was trying to do right now. Would Phlox even let them in the same room with an Antaran? Phlox, having lost his patients declares that he has tried to treat him with respect, and refuses to listen to these insults. He blames the Antarans for keeping the hatred alive, and then leaves sickbay.
(Enterprise Mess) (Later)
T'Pol enters gets a drink and then asks if she can join Phlox who explains he is not in the mood for company. She begins to walk away when Phlox apologizes and asks her to sit down. He asks about her repairs on the transport, which are going slowly, and she asks about his patient.
Phlox explains that he is dying, but that seems to be his wish. T'Pol states that that is unfortunate. Phlox has had patients before who have refused treatment, but they were in the end stages of an illness, but this patient is prepared to die just to prove a point. And he understands why.
He begins to explain about when he was younger, he wanted to take a trip to an arboreal planet near their system. It was a park of sorts with a great verity of exotic animal life. He and some friends had planned the trip for months, but a week before he was supposed to leave, his grandmother took him aside and told him he couldn't go because the planet was tainted. She believed that even though it had been years since the Antarans had lived there, that it had been spoiled by their presence.
T'Pol asked if he went, but he didn't. But when he had children, he took them there. He was determined not to raise his children as he was raised. T'Pol tells him that his children were fortunate to have a father that taught them to embrace other cultures. "I certainly tried" says Phlox who excuses himself and says good night.
(Xantoras caves)
Malcolm and Trip are crawling through a tight passage. Unsure if they are on the right path, even though it seemed to be the only one, Trip decides to give it a half hour more then they will turn back. Malcolm scans and finds 3 Denobulan life signs about 50 meters ahead.
Malcolm and Trip exit the passage, and enter a large cavern filled with different rock formation, and 3 Denobulans.
Trip and Malcolm explain they are here on behalf of a request from the DSA to find them, because the Xantoras government has given 2 days for all off-worlders to leave, and that was 3 days ago. The Denobulans suggest that Malcolm and Trip should leave then.
Trip explains that they have been ordered to get them out of there and they have a lot of climbing ahead of them, so they should decide what equipment they can do without.
The Denobulans state "We're not leaving."
Trip announces that they aren't leaving without them. The Denobulans believe their research is to important to just leave, and don't believe they are in any danger, no matter how serious Trip and Malcolm say the situation is.
Trip can't believe that they are willing to risk their lives over some rocks, but the one Denobulan explains he has never seen such a remarkable collection of speleothems and he has been searching for 14 years and never seen a site this perfect.
Trip considers it and asks how much more time do they need. They say 2 to 3 weeks. 2 TO 3 WEEKS! Trip states the dangers they have gone through to find them with an injured man waiting for them and they have just enough time to get out of here before they end up in front of a Xantoras firing squad! His orders are to bring them back, and he promises them that is what he is going to do.
Denobulan - "You can't force us to leave."
Trip - "You want to bet! We didn't risk our lives just so we could here you say thanks but no thanks. So pack up what ever you need, because I swear, I'll tie you up and drag you out by your ankles if that's how you want it."
Denobulan - "We have a lot of samples. We'll need some help."
Trip - "Fine."
(Enterprise sickbay)
Phlox again is scanning the Antaran, who tells Phlox he would rather spend his last few days alone.
Phlox - "That's your decision, but if my knowledge of Antaran life spans is correct, your last few days won't come for about 60 years."
The Antaran - "What are you talking about?"
Phlox - "Once the intra-celluler regeneration is complete you should be able to..."
Antaran - "I've refused your treatment."
Phlox as he approaches the Antaran- "I need to take you off your pain medication before I begin the procedure..."
Antaran - "Get away from me. I was told your principles prevented you from treating me against my will. Or don't your ethics apply to Antarans?"
Phlox tells the Antaran that he did have a nightmare. You had asked if I had heard stories as a child about the Antarans. He explains that his grandmother lived through the last war, and that he used to lay in bed at night thinking about her stories, terrified that one of those evil Antarans would climb through his window.
The Antaran states that he hopes his confession makes him feel better, but it doesn't change a thing.
Phlox then says, you also asked if I had any children. I have 5, and no, I never told them my grandmothers stories. And when they asked him about the Antarans he told them the truth, at least as best as he knew it. He told them about the Denobulans military campaigns against the Antarans, about how they had demonized them, and turned them into a faceless enemy. He wanted them to learn to judge people for what they really are, not what the propaganda tells them.
"How would you know what we really are?" says the Antaran.
Phlox - "I don't, but I am glad to say that my children would consider my grandmother's attitude archaic. All of them..., but one. We have grown more open minded sense the last war, but there are still Denobulans who fear Antarans, even hate them.
My youngest son Mettus was seduced by those people. I did my best to convince him he was mistaken, I told him I wouldn't tolerate the values he was embracing. It created a rift between us. Maybe I didn't do enough to reach him. The last time we spoke was nearly 10 years ago.
You wanted to know what my children would think if they were here right now. I can tell you what Mettus would think. He would be happy to have me to grant your request, and let you die, but that is not the example I try to set for my children. Why not live? And set an example for yours?"
(Xantoras Caves)
Malcolm, Trip, and the 3 Denobulans crawling out through the small, cramped tunnel come to a stop, when the Denobulan in the lead stops to take a rock sample container out of a hiding place under some rocks. Trip tries to get the Denobulan to keep moving, and doesn't understand why he isn't.
Trip then discovers what he is doing and says that they can't carry any more rock samples, but the Denobulan says that it took them 6 weeks to extract them from the rock bed.
Trip - "If you don't start moving in the next 5 seconds, I'm going to take out my phase pistol and shoot you in the @$$!"
Denobulan - "These are priceless!"
Trip (as he reaches for his phase pistol) - "1.... 2...."
Then with true Hollywood timing the cave around them begins to shake.
Trip - "GO!"
The Denobulan begins to move again.
Meanwhile up on Travis' perch he tries to press back against the wall, still in pain, as best he can, to keep from being hit by falling debris.
Back at the bottom of the shaft, Trip and Malcolm begin hooking up their climbing gear. As the ground shakes again, Trip says that it might be some kind of seismic activity, but Malcolm thinks it sounds more like weapons fire. (And I think I'd trust him on that one.) But Trip says they still have 2 hours till the deadline.
Trip tells the Denobulans that they better get their climbing gear on, but the Denobulans tell them that they don't have any.
Malcolm - "You mean to tell us that you climbed down that rock face without any ropes, any safety equipment at all?"
Denobulan - "Exactly"
Trip - "Well in that case, after you."
At which point the Denobulans reveal a little more into their people as they start climbing the wall in such a way that would make certain web shooting, super hero proud.
Just then another, closer weapons blast brings a large boulder falling to their position. They all get up as close as they can against the wall. Everyone is OK as they begin the long climb before they get trapped down there.
(Enterprise Bridge)
Archer want's to know why the Xantorans are attacking his people, when there is still an hour and a half before the deadline. The Xantoran Governor assures Archer that they are not targeting the landing team or the Denobulans, but soldiers from the previous regime who have refused to accept the change in power.
Archer insists that they wait until his people are in the clear, but the governor says that that is impossible. Archer brings up their agreement, but the governor states they agreed to 3 days nothing more.
Archer has T'Pol target the patrol that is firing on the caves. The governor says that if they attack his people, they will retaliate. T'Pol locks on to their coordinates. Archer gives the order to charge weapons.
The governor asks if Archer really wants to be at war with them. To which Archer counters, "The question is, do you really want to be at war with us? ...stick to our original agreement and you won't find yourself fighting on two fronts."
(Xantoras caves)
Malcolm and Trip are pulling themselves up the ropes as the "Spidey-like" Denobulans climb up the rock face with ease. At which point the bombing on the surface stops.
(Enterprise Sickbay)
Phlox enters and walks up to the Antaran who has asked to see him. It appears that Phlox's words got through to him. He believes Phlox was sincere. He was also reminded of his children, and has decided to accept the treatment.
(Xantoras caves/surface)
At the top of the cliff, Malcolm and Trip heave up Travis who is holding some of the rock sample containers. One of the containers falls, to the dread of the Denobulan. Trip tell shim to forget about it, to which the Denobulan responds that fortunately he has more in his case. (I think he's learning!)
(Enterprise Bridge)
Hoshi continues trying to gain contact with the landing party. ...........no response. Archer decides to go down in shuttle pod one wit a security team, but before he can leave the bridge Trip hails the Enterprise.
Archer - "You're cutting it pretty close commander. The deadline passed two hours ago."
Trip - "Better late then never."
Trip assures the Captain that they have the Denobulans along with some very rare speleothems.
The shuttle pod is leaving the planet for orbit when they are attacked by a Xantoran patrol ship. After a few low power shots giving the shuttle pod a little send off, the Xantoran ship veers off leaving the shuttle pod to continue on its way.
(Enterprise Sickbay)
Archer enters asking about the Antaran. Phlox says the procedure was successful. Archer says he is glad Phlox didn't defy his orders. He didn't look forward to throwing him into irons, to which Phlox agrees he wasn't looking forward to either.
Archer asks how he talked the patient into it. Phlox asks if Archer is familiar with the Doctor/Patient confidentiality. "Of course you could always order me to tell you."
(Enterprise corridor/airlock)
Archer walks the Antaran to the airlock explaining that the doctor was unable to see him off because he was taking care of Travis. He also says he is sorry his research was cut short on Xantoras, but the Antaran assures him that his time spent on board was an education in it's self.
Showing just how much he has learned he is willing to leave on the same transport as the 3 Denobulans.
(Perhaps these first small steps will lead the Denobulans and the Antarans in a direction they never expected. Again, I just know there is a lesson in here somewhere!)
Enterprise and the transport part and go to warp. Phlox, in sickbay begins recording...
"Dear Mettus:
I know it's been some time since I've written, and I know chances are slim that you'll respond to this letter. However, something has happened that compels me to try to reach you again.
I've had an experience that has opened many old wounds. As painful as it's been, it's also changed something in me. I hope, if you are willing to listen, might begin to change something in you."
(Fade out) (End credits)
I'm sorry it took so long to write this episode out. It was a complicated episode, and I had a lot of things going on.
I enjoyed this episode very much, but I'm not always very objective when it comes to Star Trek, unless it is very, and I repeat, VERY bad.
I hope you enjoyed it too, and if you haven't seen it, I hope you get the chance.
